Isaac Brockbank Jr. (1837-1927)
Isaac Brockbank Jr. (1837-1927) was born on 13 Jul 1837 at Liverpool, Lancashire, England, and died on 4 Mar 1927 in Holladay, Salt Lake, Utah, USA. He is the son of Isaac Brockbank Sr. and Elizabeth Mainwaring. His father joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1843 at Liverpool. The family immigrated to the United States in 1852; crossed the plains to Utah with the Mormon pioneers; and settled at Spanish Fork, Utah.
Isaac married two wives. He fathered thirteen children with his first wife Katherine Alice Howard and eleven children with my great-grandmother, Mary Ann Park. His experience with the doctrine of plural marriage was sometimes difficult because his first wife had second thoughts about his entering into the everlasting covenant. He paid a heavy price for his convictions and choice of a plural lifestyle, when at age fifty he was given a heavy fine and six months in prison. In his writings he testified that the "principle" was from God and was correct. The life of Isaac Brockbank Jr. was characterized by hard work and generous service to his church. He was a persistent businessman with a strong testimony of the Restored Gospel. He marked his place in history by carefully recording a complete and insightful autobiography wherein he clearly established himself as a precise and articulate writer and man of considerable intellect. Isaac started his autobiography in Salt Lake Valley while in prison in 1887; the last entry is dated 1924. He tells of his family, his activity in the Church and life in pioneer times. The work includes a list of the children and grandchildren of his father, Isaac Brockbank (1805-1878) and the children of his grandfather, Daniel Brockbank (1773-1840) of Bowness, Westmoreland, England. Portions of his autobiography were first published in 1951 and included a detailed biography of his father, Isaac Brockbank Sr.. An incomplete edition of Isaac Jr. Brockbank's autobiography was published in the Brockbank family genealogical work entitled "An Historical and Genealogical Record of Isaac Brockbank Sr." published in 1959. In 1993 a Great grandson of Isaac Brockbank Jr., Stephen W. Brockbank, undertook the task of completely transcribing the one-hundred ninety-four page handwritten original work of Isaac Brockbank Jr. The result was a fifty-nine page document which Stephen made available to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This document was saved on microfilm by the Genealogical Society of Utah and is available at the Church's Family History Library. It is thought to be the most complete and correct of the various records covering the life of Isaac Brockbank Jr. (Brockbank, Isaac, Autobiography, in [Stephen W. Brockbank], Isaac Brockbank, Jr., 1837-1927: Autobiography [1997].
