August 2019 Turnings
Over seventy years ago my cousin Cal took glee in making fun of my squinty eyes. Now he is
gone to the great beyond and I can still see well enough to turn bowls. This here is
my favorite place on earth to spend creative time.

Highlight of the Month
Daughter Jodi and her three children came to visit. The two boys stayed with us while Mom and daughter took a well deserved trip to New York City to take in all the sights there, including several Broadway shows.
Menwhile we enjoyed our two grandsons, who were left behind, and we thought often of "The Man from the Mountain," son-in-law Steve, who was taking a solitary bike tour of far away places in southern Utah and northern New Mexico and Arizona.
Emma saved money, over many days, for the trip. She displayed and sold many of Grampa's turnings from a stand in her front
yard in Salt Lake City. She is a successful entrepreneur at age nine. Click to enlarge photos below.

Upon returning from NYC, Jodi worked the lathe and produced this beautiful live edge
bowl from a blank of Honey Locust. A gift for a friend, she said.
Safety First, always!
This month we acquired a wonderful new shop tool.
In segmenting it is helpful to run each of the rings through the sander before the glue-up.
Creating a segmented turning....
The clicking sound is from the bowl only turning at about 130 rpm. When the rpm is turned up the sound goes away!
